Sabbāsava Sutta

The second sutta of the Majjhimanikāya.

It was taught to the monks at Jetavana, and describes how the corruptions (āsavā) can be destroyed. Extirpation of the corruptions comes only to those who know and see things as they really are. Corruptions can be got rid of in many ways:

  1. by scrutiny (dassanā),
  2. by restraint (saṃvarā),
  3. by use of requisites (paṭisevanā),
  4. by endurance (adhivāsanā),
  5. by avoidance (parivajjanā),
  6. by removal (vinodanā), and
  7. by mental development (bhāvanā).

The sutta describes each methods in detail. M.i.6 ff.
