VeḷudvÄreyya Sutta


The brahmins and householders of VeḷudvÄra visit the Buddha when he comes to their village and ask for a teaching that will be profitable to them. The Buddha points out to them the advantages of keeping the five precepts:

  1. abstention from taking life,
  2. abstention from theft, fraud, etc.,
  3. avoidance of slander,
  4. abstention from harsh speech and
  5. abstention frivolous talk,

and of having faith in the Buddha, Dhamma, and Saá¹…gha. S.v.352f.
