Vedisa, Vedisagiri


A city, the home of DevÄ«, mother of Mahinda. He and Saá¹…ghamittÄ were born there, and, just before he left for Sri Lanka, he went there to visit his mother and stayed for one month in the monastery, which was also called Vedisagiri. (Dpv.vi.15; xii.14, 35; Sp.i.70, 71; Mhv.xiii.6 9,18).

Vedisa was fifty leagues from PÄá¹­aliputta and was founded by the SÄkyans who fled from Viá¸Å«á¸abha’s massacre (Mbv., p. 98).

Vedisa is identified with the modern Bhilsa in Gwalior State, twenty-six miles north east of Bhopal. Mhv. Trs. 88, n. 4.
