MahÄ Assapura Sutta
Taught at Assapura, in the Aá¹…ga country.
Since monks are called recluses (samaṇÄ) they must train themselves to be true recluses and brahmins (brÄhmaṇa); they should be:
- conscientious and scrupulous,
- pure in deed, word, and thought,
- guarding the doors of the senses,
- moderate in eating,
- ever vigilant, mindful, and self-possessed,
- striving to abandon the five hindrances (nivaraṇÄ) and cultivate absorption (jhÄna).
Such an almsman can truly be called a recluse, a brahmin, one who is cleansed (nahÄtaka), a sage (vedagÅ«), a scholar (sotthiya), a Noble One (ariya), and a worthy saint (arahant). He is an ideal recluse. M.i.271-80.
