MÄhissati

A city in the Buddha’s day, mentioned as lying on the route from BÄvari’s hermitage to SÄvatthi (SN. vs. 1011).

According to the MahÄgovinda Sutta (D.ii.) it was the capital of Avanti and was founded at the same time as CampÄ.

It was probably the capital of Southern Avanti, Avanti DakkhiṇÄpaá¹ha, the capital of Northern Avanti being UjjenÄ«.

In the MÄhÄbhÄrata (ii.31, 10) Avanti and MÄhismati are spoken of as two different countries.
