Gopaka Moggallト]a (Sutta)
Gopaka Moggallト]a.- A brahmin minister of Ajト》asattu, in charge of some defence works in Rト)agaha (M.iii.7). See Gopaka Moggallト]a Sutta. The Theragト》hト (vs.1024) contains a stanza spoken by Moggallト]a Thera in answer to a question by Gopaka Moggallト]a. Gopaka asks Moggallト]a how many of the Buddha窶冱 teachings he remembers. Eighty-four thousand, answers the latter and proceeds to explain. ThagA.ii.130. Gopaka Moggallト]a Sutta.- Soon after the Buddha窶冱 death, トnanda, on his way to Rト)agaha for alms, visits the place where Gopaka Moggallト]a was strengthening the city窶冱 defences. Moggallト]a asks him if there were any monk in every way like the Buddha, and receives a negative answer. Vassakト〉a arrives and, on being told the topic of conversation, asks the same question and is told by トnanda that the monks regard the Dhamma as their protector. It is true, however, that there are monks whom they hold in great esteem and reverence, and トnanda enumerates the qualities which win for them such homage. M.iii.7ff
